Hong Kong Festivals: Here are the best, plus what to expect.

From food carnivals, film festivals, world-class events to colorful local events, Hong Kong is the place to get the experience. With such a range of fascinating events, Hong Kong has been dubbed as the events mecca of Asia. When asked, most people say that it’s the colors, dragon parades, lion dances and the energy that is most appealing. Here is a list of main festivals, holidays and events to help you plan your visit to Hong Kong.

Christmas and New Year Eve celebrations (December and January 1st)

China is not a Christian country. Nevertheless, due to the history with British colonialism, Hong Kong takes the opportunity and stage one of the world’s most festive Christmases. During the two-day public holiday Disneyland, the Hong Kong Ballet, churches and symphony of light are some of the most active places with delighting displays. If partying is more your style, join the throngs of crowds at Law Kwai Fong on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, usually MTR is running all night long too!

The Hong Kong Art Festival (Feb 16-March 18)

In the last three decades, Hong Kong has hosted rich and colorful performances showcasing the rich inclinations of the locals. Classical music, western operas, dancing, and symphonies highlight the Hong Kong cultural scene.

The Hong Kong Winter Festival (December)

The Winter Festival is sponsored by Hong Kong Tourism Administration .During the period, streets are decorated with lights with hotel and commodity prices reduced with the aim of attracting overseas visitors and locals. Main venues for the winter festival includes Hong Kong Wetland Park, Sky 100 Observation Deck, Hong Kong Ocean Park and Madame Tussauds Wax Figure Gallery.

The Hong Kong Book Fair (July 19-24)

The book fair is organized by Hong Kong Trade Development Council with the aim of promoting local reading culture. Besides cheap sales and exhibiting media products, you will have a chance to enjoy reading and writing workshop, get autographs, attend seminars, hiking and visit top Hong Kong Beaches. The main event is held at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition in Wan Chai.

The Hong Kong Shopping Festival (October 11-30)

Hong Kong has already established itself as a tourist shopping destination. During this festival, the sales are even better, attracting thousands of shoppers. The island is decorated by shopping signs with shops opening longer hours and offering goods and services at discounts. Some of the places to shop include:

  • Landmark malls for fashion in Central Hong Kong. Open hours: 10 a.m. -10 p.m.
  • IFC Mall for electronics in 8 street. Open hours: 10 a.m. -10 p.m.
  • Tung Chung’s CityGate Outlets. Open hours: 10 a.m. -10 p.m.
  • Giordano and Shatin’s large New Town Plaza.
  • Temple Street night market in Kowloon. Open hours: 6-11 p.m.
