ZRH – FRA – JFK on Lufthansa Business Class
I’m sitting here in the Business Class lounge of the Z concourse at Frankfurt airport, while I should already practically be home in New York. This is due to a mechanical failure on the airplane, supposedly some minor smoke in the back of the plane? Not really sure. So we flew two hours from Frankfurt to somewhere over England and back, good job Lufthansa. Back to that later.
This trip is part of my crazy itinerary of using US Air miles to get from HKG to JFK during the peak summer season. I’ll go into some details in a followup post.
But since I’m sitting in Frankfurt I might as well write about the portion of my trip on LH so far and hope I make it to JFK soon.
After deplaning from Thai Airways BKK – ZRH, I go onwards to my connection flight on LH ZRH – FRA. It’s a fairly painless transit. Get off the plane, go to the monitor and see where your connecting flight is. Go through the x-rays, take a shuttle train to the other terminal, go through passport (which had no line) and then walk to the new gate. It was very early in the morning too, so that probably helped since the airport looked really quiet. Overall A+
Zurich airport is a modern masterpiece although I must say people aren’t that friendly, especially compared when coming from Asia. But wait till I tell you about Germany.
Flight was on a small 737. Business class is just an economy class seat, but no one is sitting next to you, it’s either window or aisle. Definitely fine for a 45 minute flight and they even served a cold cut meal which I wasn’t expecting. Good job on this flight, and the attendants were nice too which was a plus.
Connecting in Frankfurt was more a pain. Deplaned on a staircase, had to be bused really far to the B gates, then my connecting flight was on the Z gates so had to walk what seemed like half a mile and 3 elevators to get there. The Z gates are for all of the long-haul flights it seems and was very busy in the morning hours when most flights leave to the US.
Lufthansa Business Lounge was busy and doesn’t offer much food unfortunately. Staff is surly and I think you’ll be happier if you don’t have to talk to anyone. Is this a German thing or just people who work at Lufthansa? I haven’t encountered one employee who seemed nice at Frankfurt airport. Correction, the guy who checks passports at gate Z, maybe because he doesn’t work for the airline.
Onto the flight I just got off of, LH400 and am about to get back onto, but using a different plane. 747-400, business class, had the older style seat which I don’t like, since it’s angled flat. TV is small, entertainment system is slow and doesn’t offer much to view. I think there were only like 5 sitcoms, 1 episode each, boo. It was kinda dirty and icky too when I looked in the space to store stuff.
Anyway, an hour into the flight they say there’s smoke in the back galley and need to turn back to Frankfurt. They say the plane is ready, all catered, blah blah, but of course it’s not. Not only that, when they return we’re at a remote location so they need to unload a giant 747 and bus us back and make us walk up all of these stairs through the back staircase. I’m really quite appalled but whatevers.
Once back in the terminal they don’t make an announcement until everyone is back which you know takes awhile for a 747, then they say we don’t leave for another hour, but in reality it’s too, because I still have time to sit here and write. hahaha. So hopefully in another hour I’ll be back on the plane and the next 7-8 hours to JFK will be uneventful. But in summary I won’t recommend flying through Frankfurt on LH for both the on-board and off-board experience.
I’m going to try to get some compensation now too, I think it’s supposed to be 600 EUR but I’m sure they won’t give me at the service desk and I’ll have to write to the airline.
Can’t wait for my return, LAX – SFO – YVR – HKG on UA and AC!
