Ma Maison is rated extremely high on Tripadvisor, #12 at time of this booking in all of Saigon. This property is a very unique property, and has a bed and breakfast feel.

As you can tell by the name, the property has a French character to it. The villa is designed in the Provence style and was renovated in 2009. There’s 12 rooms ranging from standard to deluxe, mostly differentiated by size.

Check-in was super easy and they knew who I was before I even told them. Before entering the hotel, you’ll be asked to remove your shoes as there’s a no shoes policy inside. Keeps everything nice and clean. There’s slippers in the room which I used while walking around.

I was greeted by Tom who brought a nice refreshing drink (it’s hot in HCMC.) Then Ms Long came by to explain the property and local area too me. She even went at lengths to talk about the restaurants and getting around to the touristy area District 1.

I was provided a key and Tom helped bring my luggage and show me my room up on the 3rd floor. As I was traveling Vietnam for a week before I arrived, I had a bit of laundry I wanted to cleaned. I got those together and Tom came to collect it a few minutes after I settled in.

The room was really nice and cute, of course it had a European flair with some Vietnamese thrown in. The bed linens were of high quality and I had my best sleep in Vietnam in this room.

Noise is also minimal as the hotel is setback in an alley and off the main road. More on this later. You will still hear motorbikes and honking on occasion, I have yet to find any Vietnamese city to be completely quiet. By Vietnamese standards my room was silent.

Cleanliness as not a problem. The room I found to be especially clean and didn’t notice any problems. Only suggestion would be a LCD TV instead of a CRT which is definitely looking dated. Granted most people won’t be watching TV though.

The bathroom was equally as charming as the room. Plenty of cute little toiletries and window dressings. The shower, as is common in Vietnam, doesn’t have a fully closing door, but I didn’t notice any problems. The glass was curved to keep most of the water in.

A full breakfast is included in the mornings. You can make your choice the night before from the menu and it’s served on the ground floor 7am – 10am. I assume they ask the night before as to get ingredients in the morning, talk about fresh! I chose the seafood noodle soup as I already had so much pho already.

Breakfast was tasty, and you’ll get some fruit and bread if you wish as well. I ordered a tea, but you should definitely have some Vietnamese coffee while you’re there. It’s a little too strong for my liking though.

You’re welcome to eat on the verandah outside, or inside. The rest of the property is cute and has some nice character and artwork, here’s some pics of the interior and exterior.

Ma Maison is located in District 3 off a main road down an alleyway. Some reviews have mentioned it being a bit unappetizing, but these people haven’t been to many alleys in Vietnam. I thought it was fine, it’s not really an alley. There’s a few internet cafes with boys playing video games and food stalls. It’s a road, but closed off to cars, motorbikes are ok. It’s about a 2-3 min walk from the hotel to the main road.

The location is about halfway between SGN airport and District 1, about 15 minutes in either direction. You have a few transport options to District 1, bus (5000 dong), motorbike, or taxi. I used Uber exclusively because I don’t speak Vietnamese. Grab is also very popular, based out of Singapore. Motorbikes can reach the property front entrance, if you take a car you’ll need to walk a very short distance.

While you aren’t in the heart of the tourist area, it’s easy to access and very cheap to get around. It’s also nice to stay in a more local and quieter part of town.

Next time you find yourself in Ho Chi Minh City, don’t hesitate to stay at Ma Maison. If you book direct the rates should be a little cheaper than an OTA. I found Ms Long and her staff Tom and John very accommodating and friendly. The amazing guest service along with unique property and setting really make Ma Maison an interesting and memorable stay. I’ll be finding them again next time I’m in HCMC.
