Location

One of the main selling points for the hotel is its location in Bukit Bintang, a busy area with a vibrant shopping and dining scene. The hotel is a block or so away from a heavily Arabic area, which influences both the selection of food and also to my mind the atmosphere on the street.

Room

The hotel interior design is a sort of modern, post-industrial chic although I felt that that made the room feel a bit grey and lacking in cosiness. There were some efforts at funky touches, from the bedside vintage-style Malaysian accounting journal notebook, to cookies at the bedside.

There was a comfortable enough bed, and a decent desk for working. There was a good array of lights albeit their controls were confusing. There was a lot of light from building outside but the curtains did well blocking it out.

The room had useful touches such as an ironing board, bathrobe and slippers.

The bathroom was in concrete and felt very southeast Asian in design in the sense that the shower was pretty ugly and not well thought through.

For a newish hotel, the condition was not great: there was a large crack in my window, and the towels in the bathroom were almost all frayed.

Amenities

The hotel has a rooftop swimming pool and bar area. This is a relaxing area and offers the chance to look out onto the city, albeit the cityscape is very urban. It does also mean that there is noise, however. During one night of my stay, the noise floated many floors below till late at night and the rooftop was closed for a private function, which is not great if that is one reason you have booked the hotel.

There is a gym, which I did not use. Meals are served in the café cum buffet area on the ground floor. The breakfast was fine – adequate in choice and decent quality. Service was prompt and friendly.

One annoyance was the slowness and unpredictability of the lifts. Often one would press the button, only to see one or more lifts go by that floor.

Conclusion

The hotel feels a bit conflicted as to whether it is designed for leisure or business travellers – based on the number of tourist families when I was there, it seems to be doing well attracting travellers.

I think other hotels in KL probably execute the hip style the Journal aims for better than it does. It’s a decent hotel with a bit of cool design dressing around the edges.
