Amari Phuket pronounced “A-MA-RI” in Thailand, as opposed to “A-MAR-I” in English is one of the top resorts in Phuket, if not the top resort. Tripadvisor ranks it as #2, so you shouldn’t be disappointed. The holiday was anything but a disappointment, you’re sure to be very pleased staying here.
It’s located in the southern part of Patong Beach, on a cliffside so you can get amazing views from the property. It’s also very quiet and secluded, while still being close to the hustle, bustle, shopping, and parties if you wish.
Amari Phuket is about 1 hour from the airport via car. I took a taxi booked which I’ll write about in a separate article about arriving into Phuket International Airport.
The resort also offers a complimentary shuttle a few times a day to the Jungceylon Shopping Mall in Patong (about a 7-10 min ride) and to Kata Beach (about 20 minutes) once a day. I wish the shuttle ran continuously so it would be easier and more affordable to get around instead of paying the inflated tuk tuk prices in Phuket. (200 baht to/from Patong, 400-500 baht to/from Kata.)
Check-in was amazing. You walk down stairs and are greeting by the beautiful architecture, bar, and ocean behind. Immediately I felt relaxed and ready to start my holiday.
Plenty of front office staff to help check me in and they greeted me warmly with a cold towel, tea, and a flower lei. (I wonder if they are called Lei’s in Thailand, I should’ve asked.) Check-in was easy as expected and I was booked in a one-bedroom suite in the Ocean Wing. The resort is huge so you take a golf cart or tuk tuk up to your room, which is kinda cool. Makes the experience feel very VIP. You could walk if you need a bit of exercise, but in 30+ degrees temperatures and 100% humidity I wasn’t attempting it.
My front desk agent not only gave me my key, but brought my bag onto the golf cart and personally drove me up to my suite towards the upper part of the Ocean Wing. Luckily I got a room nearby the Clubhouse so that was convenient. Once arrived she escorted me to the room, helped explain a few things and I tipped her. Very personal service!
One bedroom Suites
As one would expect, the suites at Amari Phuket are phenomenal. The Ocean Wing is the newer part of the resort and everything was in new and immaculate condition. This part of the property feels like your home, not just another hotel.
Living room is large and there is a small dining area with decently sized table. Plenty of space to walk around and have friends and family stay and visit. There is a large balcony off each room, and a full kitchen with a stock of cookware, utensils, and plates.
Bathroom is extremely spacious and luxuriously appointed with stone and nice fluffy towels and toiletries. Not much to explain except it was really nice to shower in such a nice bathroom. Water pressure was good, toiletries and towels ample. FYI, you don’t need to take the room towels to the beach or pool. They have blue towels at the pools, and at the lobby if you’re headed to the beach. You can take the handy wicker basket provided in the room to carry your sunblock, books, and sunglasses!
If there’s any negative with the room, is that there’s too many light switches? One night it took me a few minutes to play around and shut off all of the lights, haha. They should have one master switch to turn it all off for people like me who can’t figure out a light switch, lol.
Tip regarding the tuk tuks, call about 5 minutes before you want it to arrive. You don’t need to wait outside in the heat, they will call you to come outside when the tuk tuk is near.
The best part of booking the Ocean Wing is your access to The Clubhouse. Here you’ll have a more intimate experience with access to the infinity pool, fitness center, and restaurant up on the hilltop. It’s only accessible to other Ocean Wing guests.
There’s a very nice cocktail hour here each evening, and plenty to eat with a different roast each day. Nice touch to rotate the menu so those staying longer don’t get sick of eating the same items repeatedly.
Two bedroom suites & hotel rooms
I had the pleasure of checking out a few other rooms types such as a superior/deluxe room and two-bedroom suite. The superior rooms are still very impressive, located lower down the hill closer to the beach. They are very spacious and have bathrooms with tubs. While the buildings are part of the originally 1984 build, they have been renovated and are modernly themed matching the Ocean Wing. Below are lots of pictures I was able to take.
The resort is expansive, so while there may be a thousand people around at any given time, it really doesn’t feel that crowded due to the various pools, restaurants, and rooms.
Three pools. One at the very bottom, and largest. Right outside of Rim Talay. Another smaller one in the middle near the lobby. And the infinity pool for the Ocean Wing guests at the top of the hill.
Amari is super kid friendly. For families, there’s a full Kids Club and babysitting service available if you want some alone time. I don’t have any kids so I can’t comment on the service there, but there were lots of smiling families, so I assumed things were going smoothly and the kids were being entertained.
Arriving in Phuket early and can’t check into your room yet? Or have a late airport departure and need a place to shower and crash before your flight? The Voyager Lounge is the solution to both of these problems. Guests can relax, shower, and spend time here if they don’t have access to their room. It’s a warm comfortable space with gorgeous views. Very thoughtful, and I wish more properties would offer a space like this for the weary traveler. There’s some computers, reading materials, TVs, lounge areas, etc.
One cannot go to Thailand, and miss out on the amazing spas and massages. As you would expect, there is a full service spa perched high upon a hilltop. You will have your own private outdoor cabana with a view of the ocean and Patong while your stresses get melted away. Super romantic for couples! Lookout for some specials during the quiet times.
Of course there are fitness centers to keep you in shape during your holiday. There are two located on the property, one below the main check-in area, and another one at the Clubhouse if you area staying in the Ocean Wing.
Looking for a romantic walk or jog away from the hustle of the resort? Check out their jetty at the far end of the property, with a long pier into the water. You can look down and try to spot some fish. If you’re feeling adventurous, book a scuba excursion at the hotel and swim with the fish! There’s even a bar at the jetty, so you can enjoy some drinks and watch the sunrise or sunset. (I’m more of a sunset person…sunrises tend to be in bed for me.)
You won’t go hungry while you stay at Amari. There’s three main restaurants, Rim Talay, La Gritta, and The Clubhouse.
Rim Talay offers a huge international breakfast buffet every morning, and a themed dinner buffet each night. It’s a large restaurant located next to the main pool with plenty of seating and open views.
La Gritta is an award winning Italian restaurant. The chef hails from Rome and offers some of Phuket’s best Italian food if you’re looking for a change from Thai or Asian foods.
The Clubhouse is for Ocean Wing guests and has a smaller more limited menu with amazing views. I had most of my meals here since it was intimate and close to my suite.
If you enjoy live music, each night at the lobby bar they have a band which plays until around 11pm.
Service across the board was amazing. Each of the staff lived up to Thailand’s Land of Smiles slogan, and genuinely appeared happy to help you. I often saw the GM, Pierre walking around the property, saying hi to guests which is a nice personal touch.
The staff always met my requests with a friendly can-do attitude, and even provided me with fresh papaya one morning when there was none at the buffet. Not only that, they tried their best to remember your preferences each day. Speaking of buffet, here’s some pics of the cocktail hour at the Clubhouse. Don’t miss it, it’s phenomenal. (And you’ve paid for it.)
By the way, shuttles service ran on-time and I was able to take the shuttle to Patong and Kata Beach on two separate days. Don’t be late! Kata Beach is highly recommended, it’s a bit nicer than Patong and only 20 minutes away. Patong is about 10 minute walk down the hill if you want someplace closer.
I honestly have nothing bad to say about my experience here. It was relaxing and memorable. The facilities are top notch, the staff very attentive and caring, and located close and far enough from the action to have both party and relaxation. If I had to pick one negative, it would be the beach is a bit rocky, so you need to go off property for a proper white sandy beach with waves.
Next time you’re planning a trip to Phuket, be sure to consider Amari as the resort to stay at.
