22 Ships

One night in Wan Chai

Wan Chai no longer has a sleazy reputation, thanks to the effort from the authority. Today you can now enjoy beer and walk freely without feeling like you are walking in a hive of villainy. Let us join Dean Vowles from ANYDOKO as he guides us on the most happening bars and clubs in Wan Chai for a perfect night out in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has lots of great bars and clubs but if you want to party on a Wednesday the place you need to be is definitely Wan Chai. The infamous area used to be home to Hong Kong’s red lights district, but these days it got some of the best nightlife in the city.

So let’s grab a drink!

22 Ships

I don’t want to start a night out on an empty stomach, that is crazy. Ship Street is a home to a bunch of bars and restaurant which means it the perfect place to start with some great food and drinks.

The best seat in 22 Ships are the ones near the kitchen where you can get entertained by the food preparations. The place is bustling during the weekend so go early to get space and avoid possible starvation. Great place to have Spanish style tapas. Price is also quite reasonable.

Ophelia Bar

This place is pretty unreal and a must on a night out in Wan Chai, it’s like walking into a completely different world. Live shows, crazy costumes, and some pretty damn good drinks.

Ophelia is bar/ nightclub known for its unique concept. Some of the drinks to try to include La Demoiselle, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and the famous Cheongsam. It also doubles as a restaurant with signature dish being Truffle mushroom arancini.

Billidarts is one of my go-to places ‘cause I can play all my favorite drinking games. They have got electronic darts, pool, dedicated tables for slap cup, flip cup and the Hong Kong staple, beer pong.

It’s not going well. Not at all.

Billidart was among the beer pong pioneer bars in Hong Kong.  Aside from the beer, you can tuck into plenty of comforting American foods. Great place to re-live your beer pong college moments especially for those doing reunions.

  • How to get there: 9 mins walk from Causeway Bay MTR station, Exit B.

It’s pretty hard to find, it’s toward the edge of Wan Chai, but when you get here, Djibouti is a great place to step out of the intensity of Wan Chai grab a drink and unwind.

Billidart Ping Pong

Djibouti is a little heaven tucked down an assuming back-alley on Landale Street. Its location is perfect for those who want to whisk away from the crazy city of Hong Kong. Apart from beer Djibouti also serves Mediterranean and Middle East inspired dishes, e.g., the Djibouti platter.

  • Address: 2 Landale St, Wan Chai
  • Price range: $101-200
  • How to get there: Admiralty MTR station, Exit F, (6 min walk)

Alright, it’s time for some late night wan chai action.

The Wanch

Hong Kong has some amazing live music venue, and The Wanch is one of my favorites. You want to listen to a great band until it’s early in the morning. This is the place.

True and True. The Wanch is the spot for those who love drinks and dance the night away. The club has been running live music every night since 1987. Catch your favorite rock and classic rock tunes here as you enjoy cheap beers.

  • Beer price:
  • How to get here: Wan Chai MTR station, Exit C

Racha Moo Yang

There is no better way to end the night than with some street side Thai.

Racha Moo Yang beer and Roast Meat

If you want simple and honest Thai food, Racha Moo Yang is your spot. Since I discovered this tiny street stall, I have found myself sitting in the street side having roast duck and BBQ pork whenever I get an opportunity. Highly recommended for lovers of spicy food, seafood, and roast meat at a great value from money.
