If your hotel is not on this list, you can contact your hotel and see if they offer pick-up service (maybe at a cost), take a taxi, or just simply take a MTR  (Mass Transit Railway Corporation) train. Once you are in one of the three stations that are in the city area of Hong Kong, you can pretty much connect to your further destinations by Hong Kong’s extensive MTR system. Also check out our guide to take MTR here.

  2. Free In-Town Check-in Services + Luggage Drop-off
Just for Airport Express passengers, drop off your bags & get your boarding pass up to 24 hours in advance of your returning flight between service hours from 05:30 to 00:30, then proceed to the airport bag-free and just walk straight to security when it is time! No more need for baggage storage at hotels or carrying your bags around, and all this convenience for FREE! Most airlines (except Air Asia, Air Philippines, Angel Air, Cebu Pacific, Continental Airlines, Jetstar Asia Airlines, Oriental Thai, Pakistan International, Shenzhen Airlines, and Transaero) have their kiosks inside the paid area of the station. (If you use an Octopus to travel via the Airport Express, your full fare will be deducted at check-in rather than when you board the train).
  3. Free Porter Service
Available at all Airport Export Line stations.

Price and Discounts
Sure, the Airport Express is very comfy, fast and fuss-free but it is not the cheapest way to get to/from the airport. If you are a budget traveler, airport buses can still take you to major districts in the city, using a little more time and saving you a lot of money. For cheaper options, check out our previous pieces “E” Citybus buses (The cheapest at HK$21 from/to HK Island as of now) and Tung Chung MTR & S1 Bus.

airport express

Weird name, but Hong Kong’s Octopus Card is the Tap Card to Los Angeles Metro and the MetroCard to New York’s MTA. You can purchase one at any MTR station customer service centre (Pay HK$150 for HK$50 deposit and HK$100 value) and add value to the card. This can be used on majority of Hong Kong’s public transportation from ferries to minibuses, and a number of stores eg convenience stores, McDonalds etc.

  • There is no round-trip discount when you pay with your Octopus Card – the transaction will be counted as two single journeys only.

Airport Express Travel Passes

For as low as HK$350 get 2 trips on Airport Express line and 3 consecutive days of unlimited travel on the MTR, Light Rail and MTR Bus. Only for tourists!
