Shama operates five service apartments in Hong Kong. And others in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Bangkok and Chiang Mai. I had the pleasure of staying two nights at Shama Central on Peel Street, and was pleasantly surprised, particularly at the size of the 1 bedroom units.
Rates are very competitive with hotels in the area, but you get much more space versus a hotel. Definitely something to consider if you are traveling with others or want a bit more space to relax in. For example, there’s a Shama winter promotion, $5,667 HKD for 3 nights.
This particular building appears to have been built as a regular apartment maybe about 20 years ago. When you look for it, be sure to look for the blue Shama signs as the entrance blends into the surround street fairly inconspicuously. There’s also another property, Shama Hollywood, on Hollywood road just up the hill, don’t go there by mistake if you want to go to the Central property.
It’s easy to walk up from the MTR or you can taxi up to 60 Hollywood Road or Lyndhurst Terrace and walk down. It’s less than a 5 min walk uphill from Queen’s Road Central, looks more intimidating than it really is. Peel street is a bit difficult to drive, I didn’t see a taxi go down that block during my two days. It’s a cool block with a local Hong Kong feeling. A lot of small stores, steep streets, and local vendors selling food and souvenirs.
Check-in was super easy, you ring the management bell and they’ll let you in to go up to the 2nd floor. I reserved a 1 bedroom and my apartment was ready when I arrived around noon. The staff was friendly and they brought me up to the unit to show me the features.
Each of the rooms and bathroom are HUGE by Hong Kong standards. Even bigger than some apartments I’ve seen in the US. I was really pleasantly surprised by the sheer size. It would be great for a family or gathering place.
Kitchen had a large bar and plenty of amenities you’d expect, microwave, coffee maker, stove top, sink, refrigerator, plates, pots, glasses, utensils, etc. The cook books were a nice touch too.
Bathroom was large and nicely decorated in marble. There was a shower on one side, and the toilet on the other. There’s also a laundry hamper if you can use to bring your clothes down to the laundry room. There were a few higher end toiletries as well, which is a nice touch. One gripe with the bathroom was the sink faucet was hard to turn. As they were completely round, there’s no where to grip onto them, so often I had to wrap a towel around it to get some friction. Plus side, towels were thick and fluffy. A sign of quality.
As I was on the 15th floor, view from the unit was a nice open city view. You can see all of the various buildings around Central, and could even peek through to see the harbor. While there was some city construction noise during the day, it’s over pretty much by 6pm. I slept very well and the king sized bed was nice and comfy. They have high quality linens and plenty of pillows which helped. I would suggest ear plugs if you’re a light sleeper since you’re in the middle of the city, but I didn’t need to use them.
Additional amenities include a nice gym on the 2nd floor, and laundry facility on 6th floor. Laundry is free btw! You can purchase detergent from the office, $15 for 2 pieces. Keep in mind the washing machines are tiny HK sizes, so after a few pieces of clothes it would get full.
There’s a Handy phone in the unit available for use during your stay too. Free long distance to many countries, or you can use it as a wi-fi hotspot too.
Overall my stay was better than expected. The unit size was really what impressed me, but along with that, the housekeeping service was spot on. I didn’t notice any area that appeared dirty or unattended to. While not the newest property out there, it is extremely well maintained and central to offices, bars, and restaurants. Staff also did their best to answer all of my questions and I would not hesitate to stay here again at all. In fact I’d probably make Shama Central one of my first choices due to the location, and value for size the property offers.
