Review: J Plus Hotel by YOO Causeway Bay

J Plus Hotel by YOO is one of the more artistic and creative hotels I’ve stayed in lately. If you simply take a look at the lobby, you get a good idea of how the rooms will be decorated as.

J Plus: Lobby

J Plus is located right in the heart of Causeway Bay. It’s a block away from Sogo, Hysan Place, Lee Gardens, and the MTR station. Times Square is only a 5 min walk. You really can’t get any more central to Hong Kong Island’s shopping and restaurant mecca.

In case you’re not familiar with YOO, as I wasn’t, here’s a blurb from the YOO website.

No one leaves a YOO Collection hotel unchanged.  We create unique experiences for guests, introducing them to new ways of looking at the world by drawing on a portfolio of leading Signature Designers and the renowned YOO Design Studio.

J Plus Hong Kong has a few different studios and suites to choose from. I stayed in the one-bedroom suite which was huge, 780 sq ft. Check-in was easy, there’s a small desk in the corner of the lobby which replaces your typical front desk. Didn’t take very long, hotel uses a physical key instead of key card, FYI.

Once I walked into the room, I was pleasantly shocked by how cool the design was, and how large the suite is. There’s plenty of artwork and different furniture pieces. There were also a few different sofas to sit on and I saw this cardboard dining room chair, which I thought was neat.

The bathroom was nicely appointment, though it was a little tight compared with the rest of the apartment. It’s decorated in marble all over. (Towels are above the toilet btw, it took me a few seconds to locate them after hopping out of the shower.)

Having a kitchenette area was a nice bonus. There’s a fridge and some kitchenware for you to use. Being in Causeway Bay though, you probably won’t be cooking much, if at all. Nicely designed with the same marble theme as the bathroom.

The bedroom comes with a double bed. Fairly standard with a few extra design touches. Nice to have a separate bedroom. If you get the Studio then the bedroom area will be separated by a curtain.

J Plus has a few different amenities you don’t typically won’t see:

  • Daily continental breakfast, afternoon cakes, and evening wine served at Lobby

  • 24-hour coffee, tea, water, juices, and soft drinks in Lobby

  • Free HANDY smartphone

  • Self-service laundry

Upon check-in, the Handy phone was being promoted fairly heavily for the free unlimited calling to Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, USA, and UK. While I didn’t use it for overseas calling myself. I did use it for local calling and wi-fi hotspot which was “handy.” 😀

In case you’re interested in the Studios, I asked to see those as well. Here are some of the pictures. They’re sized at 380 sq ft each. There are two layouts, I would ask for the one with the first layout shown as the living area is a bit more spacious and has a more rectangular layout.

I checked out super early the following morning, around 6am. One thing to note, J Plus calls housekeeping to check your room after you check out, so it takes a few more minutes than usual. I don’t like this practice, and generally non-Chinese hotels in Hong Kong will bill you after for any damages, so I’m a bit surprised it’s done here.

On the plus side, I was asked if I needed a taxi and the agent helped go outside and fetch me a cab. As it was 6am, most taxi drivers were still sleeping so it did take a few minutes. He was very friendly and helpful though, wish I got his name.

Overall, this hotel is a pleasant change from your typical stodgy corporate mass market room. It’s got plenty of pop and color to tickle your senses. The suites also provide a bit more space than your usual hotel room, so it’ll be nice to stretch out a bit if you can budget it.

If you want to be in the Causeway Bay area, J Plus is certainly worth considering. The small boutique feel, and focus on art and uniqueness certainly will make your stay memorable!
