There are some cheap offers for this hotel available from Hong Kong and I recently stayed there. The first thing to mention is location. It is in Guzhen 古鎮鎮, which is an area in the northwest of Zhongshan. It’s a long way from both the main area and the ferry terminal. Guzhen itself has a lot of local shops and restaurants, so there is quite a bit to do there, but it is not the main area of Zhongshan. Guzhen is famous for lighting exhibitions and around the hotel and nearby there are many lighting centres.
Because of the location, reaching the hotel from the ferry port serving Hong Kong takes an hour or more, and may not be convenient given the dearth of taxis. However, the hotel is located immediately behind Guzhen railway station. From there trains go to Guangzhou South and elsewhere, so a convenient way to reach the hotel from Hong Kong may be by train although as the trains go from the far out Guangzhou South you’d need to plan carefully. If you want more information on buying train tickets, you can read about buying mainland tickets in Hong Kong.
The hotel is quite new. It feels clean and airy inside. It is housed in a lighting exhibition complex where construction is ongoing both behind and in front of the hotel, but I was not disturbed by construction noise during my stay. There are some local restaurants and a couple of local shops in the street behind the hotel, and a full selection in Guzhen proper, which is just a bus ride or about a half hour walk away.
My room was spacious and well appointed. There were some things I really liked about it, for example the curtains close over one another and are of decent quality, so at nighttime the outside light can be completely blocked out.
The bathroom is also good, with a well sized bath and a spacious feel.
The front desk staff are not very useful – calling ahead of time I always got disconnected when asking to speak in English, and when connecting to the Chinese line the information wasn’t properly conveyed. During the stay they were also not very useful in answering questions. By contrast, the restaurant staff were friendly, helpful and proactive – a real credit to the hotel.
There is a shuttle bus service, details below. This basically just goes to the Guzhen area, so is only helpful if you want to stay in and around Guzhen.
