Trip Report:

Kuala Lumpur is a nice quick 4-hour getaway from Hong Kong. Air Asia usually has the cheapest non-stop flights to KUL, and Malaysian Airlines and Cathay Pacific at higher prices. Like Hong Kong, there’s an airport express train, but I only took that going to the airport. Arriving I came via VIP bus from Singapore, the seats were better than first class on an plane and there was a karaoke room on the bottom level of the double-decker bus!

Berjaya Times Square

While Kuala Lumpur isn’t the most popular when it comes to sights and activities, I think it’s definitely has enough to keep you occupied for a long weekend. I stayed nearby the Berjaya Times Square which is this massive multi-story shopping mall with a nice food court on top. This isn’t a high-end mall so lots of good deals to be found, my sister bought some shoes. There’s even a rollercoaster inside, good to take the kids.

Malaysia is a great country for food. Malaysia cuisine is delicious and cheap! Be sure to bring your appetite with you when you visit. One thing I’ll never forget were the people buying drinks poured in plastic baggies, instead of cups or cuplike containers…then they just stick a straw in.

Of course the Petronas Twin Towers should be on everyone’s list of things to visit. You start by watching a propoganda video for the oil company and then they whisk you up a cargo elevator to the sky bridge where you can get a great view of the city…highly recommended.

My favorite attraction of Kuala Lumpur however is the Batu Caves. This is a religious cave formation outside of the city, and is breathtaking. You have to walk up a number of stairs however, and there’s lots of monkeys around. So if you don’t like walking up stairs, or monkeys, this isn’t the place for you. (Now that I think of it, it’s not really a place for me neither, but I loved it.)
