I recently stayed at the Gran Hotel in Mérida. The hotel is situated in the heart of the colonial old town, with tourist sights, restaurants, cafes, and a bookshop all a stone’s throw away. As a tourist, the location could not be better.
The accommodation was around four hundred dollars, which felt like decent though not amazing value. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant and so did not offer breakfast. That was a downside. There are places to eat nearby but I always prefer a hotel to offer a breakfast inhouse.
The service was efficient without much charm. However, the draw was the building and what a draw. The façade doesn’t belie the aged colonial feeling and welter of antiques inside.
They make each room different. My room was a fair size and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had only a shower and was more modern in style than the rest of the room, but adequate for purpose.
If like many Asian tourists you want something sleek and modern, the Gran Hotel will not suit you. But if you are looking for a hotel with colonial era décor and charm it is a wonderful place. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
