Bhutan is something of a mystical holiday destination, famed for stunning views and low numbers of tourists.
At our last reader meetup a question came up about how to get from Hong Kong to Bhutan. (If you want to join the next discussion in person, please come to our forthcoming reader meetup).
There is only one international airport in Bhutan, which is at Paro. From there, the country’s two passenger airlines Druk Air and the newer Bhutan Airlines serve destinations including Bangkok and Singapore. Presently no other international airlines serve Bhutan. There is no direct service to Hong Kong, so you would probably need to connect in Bangkok, Singapore or if you preferred India. Your best bet would be to ask a local travel agent to construct the best itinerary for you. Some Hong Kong travel agents also offer package trips to Bhutan and there are also Bhutanese specialists like Druk Asia, who have offices in both Bangkok and Singapore.
It is also possible to travel overland from India to Bhutan. The Bhutanese government has a webpage giving more detail on the overland route and travel to Bhutan more generally, explaining how to visit the country. If you have any tips on getting to Bhutan, please feel free to post them in the comment section below to help your fellow travellers.
