Asia Miles to charge for date changes on awards
This got picked up by one mile at a time and it’s really terrible news for Hong Kong travelers…Asia Miles starting Oct 8, will charge $25 for award date changes or charge 1,000 Asia Miles. I don’t see any mention of fee waivers for elite frequent flyers.
Here is the update on the web site.
Airline Award Ticket Re-booking
Applicable only to change of confirmed flight date or flight number for tickets issued on or after 8 October 2013, with the same itinerary, same airline, and same ticket expiry date. Charge per flight sector per passenger.
Honestly, the only good thing about Asia Miles is the ability to change dates for free, now there really is no reason to use Asia Miles unless you’re married to a CX flight attendant.
I highly suggest using the British Airways Executive Club as I think their miles are much more redeemable and at lower rates. Also, their change fees are very reasonable and you can book awards and make changes online.
This was probably bound to happen eventually as airlines looking for ancillary revenue. I’d try booking your awards before October 8 for the flexibility of changing dates for free. Personally I’ve used up all of my Asia Miles and rely primarily on BA and AA’s frequent flyer programs for one world travel now. BA really is great and I’ve redeemed tickets to Taipei, LAX, Bali, and Jakarta recently at reasonable redemption rates. Also, you can buy miles at 1.3 cents USD each time you redeem economy tickets, so I do that to keep my stock of Avios fairly full.
Lastly, if you have Asia Miles to spare, use 1,000 miles for a date change instead of $25. Asia Miles aren’t worth that much to most travelers.
