Qatar Airways will join oneworld, most likely in late 2013 or early 2014. This is a huge win for oneworld since they are falling behind the other two major alliances in terms of routes and carriers. It also doesn’t hurt that Qatar is consistently ranked as one of the top airlines in the world!
Qatar Airways has a huge network from their hub in Doha and I think fills a void in the oneworld route map. While they do partner with Royal Jordanian, RJ is such a small airline that people rarely fly them.
This is also a great win for travelers from Hong Kong. Since Cathay’s Asia Miles programme is part of oneworld, Asia Miles members now have another carrier they can redeem flights on. Currently Qatar flies a whopping three times daily between Doha and Hong Kong. They use Doha basically as a major connecting point to their onward flights to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. You could even fly them to North America, though it’s the long way around the globe.
Stay tuned for developing news on this exciting addition to oneworld, and it’s a great win for Hong Kong travelers.
