Since virtually everyone in Hong Kong is an Asia Miles member, I created a series of posts advising the methods I use to search for award seats on Asia Miles or one of the oneworld partners. Therefore, these posts also apply to members of British Airways Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage, Qantas Frequent Flyer, JAL Mileage Bank, or another oneworld program.
Here is the list:
- Cathay Pacific / Dragonair
- American Airlines AAdvantage
- British Airways Avios
- Qantas Frequent Flyer
- Japan Airlines Mileage Bank
Through the American Airlines (AA) online booking system, you can search for awards on multiple oneworld airlines. This is a great tool for Asia Miles holders since most are Oneworld partners.
My strategy when booking on AA.com is fairly simple, just enter the normal roundtrip destination, and it’ll show availability on the outbound and roundtrip separately. I find AA’s system pretty robust too, so it’ll check unusual connection cities and provide overnight connections as well. Sometimes though you still won’t find availability and you may need to be a little creative so you can utilize AA’s multi-city tool to check available seats for direct city to city points.
Partners searchable on AA.com
- American Airlines
- British Airways
- Alaska Airlines
- Hawaiian Airlines (not Oneworld, AA partner)
The best thing about this tool is that it’s fast, and doesn’t require a sign-up or log-in. Any MileSAAver seat is available for booking on partners including Asia Miles.
Some sample itineraries for HKG travelers: you could search for flights between HKG and Australia on QF or the UK on QF / BA.
If you’re using AAdvantage Miles, Hawaiian Airlines (HA) is an interesting one. Since HA flies to a few Asian destinations from their Honolulu HNL hub, you can stop or connect there to/from Asia and the US. Hypothetically you can route yourself HKG – MNL (CX) – HNL (HA) – LAX (HA or AA).
AA also has great economy off-peak rewards between Japan and the US, so NRT – HNL – JFK would only cost 25K miles each way and you can even stopover at HNL free by flying Hawaiian Airlines! In October I’m flying LAX – JFK (stopover) – HND for only 25K miles on AA.
