Cathay Pacific upgraded their web site the last day or two. Now you can search and book British Airways award tickets using Asia Miles online. Also, Premium Economy redemption are available online too now, I can’t remember seeing those seats pop up before. Only economy, business, and first class where showing if I remember correctly.
I discovered this randomly as I was searching for seats online, here is a screenshot.
As you can see, if you search for award tickets on Cathay Pacific’s web site, it now displays both CX and BA flights. This is a great improvement although I’d love to see all of the Asia Miles partner carriers added in the future. The Asia Mile redemption tickets are priced at the same amount as flying on CX and will save you some time from calling the call center if you wanted to redeem flights using BA. It also provides connecting flights on BA as well.
Regarding the availability of premium economy, I think it’s a GREAT redemption option for long-haul travel as it only costs a few thousand more miles. For example, from HKG – LHR it’s 40K for economy, and 48K for premium economy. I’d definitely spend the 8,000 miles if I had it on the extra legroom and service. Tickets are typically 75-100% more expensive for premium economy vs regular economy if purchasing a ticket outright.
While I think BA’s web site is still superior as it displays award space for many more oneworld partners, this is an step in the right direction for Cathay. Even though I still believe Cathay’s website is lightyears behind 2013. Why do I always have to click on the country on the main page even if the “remember this choice” is selected?
