Cathay Pacific Flight to Newark EWR March 2014

In case you haven’t heard, CX is offering a new route from HKG to EWR (Newark, NJ) starting March 1, 2014. This flight complements their already 4 daily flights to New York JFK Airport. (3 non-stop, 1 via Vancouver.) If you’re not familiar, NYC has three area airports, JFK, LGA, and EWR. LGA doesn’t take international flights, and primarily is for flights east of the Mississippi with some minor exceptions.

It wasn’t long ago that Cathay added their third non-stop to JFK and now with a fifth flight to the NYC area, I guess Cathay really owns the market. I hope United doesn’t get driven out of the lucrative NYC – HKG Route, but if you compare service it’s really no comparison. Cathay must been making gobs of money on these long-haul routes to NY since they just keep adding capacity, and works out for me since my family lives in NY.

As for connecting flights, AA is CX’s oneworld partner in the US and AA has a small presence at EWR. UA really dominates Newark and is part of the larger Star Alliance. If you need to connect to other parts of the US, most likely you’ll need to continue taking the flights through JFK to connect to AA.

Newark airport is about a 15 minute car ride to lower Manhattan with no traffic, upwards of over an hour with traffic + tolls. United and Newark Airport always tout their AirTrain from the airport to Path, Amtrak, or NJ Transit, where you get to NY or other parts of NJ. It’s sounds more convenient than it is, and I have yet to find someone who’s actually taken it. Just try to get a pickup if you can, even bus might be better. Coach USA runs a shuttle to NYC for $16 one way $28 roundtrip and comes every 15 minutes!

Here is the schedule as currently proposed, of course this is all assuming they get the green light from the US government:

Hong Kong–Newark Schedule: 10 March 2014 onwards (Daylight Saving Time)
