Saw on the Twittersphere this week from @OneMileataTime that Avianca is offering 100% bonus on purchased miles. This results in miles costing 1.5 cents USD each. For flyers to Central America/South America I would say their award redemption chart is fantastic, less so to other destinations originating out of Asia. (I created an Excel file for the award redemption: Avianca Redemption Chart)
Hong Kong I believe falls under “China” in the North Asia region of their award chart since there’s no Hong Kong listed. It’s 70,000 to Central America, 85,000 to North South America, and 95,000 to South South America in economy. This is a huge difference compared with United for example who charges 140,000 miles from North Asia to South America.
For example, if you’re flying from HKG to Costa Rica a random date in October, the cheapest fare on UA cost $1728 USD round trip. Buying the miles for this trip will cost $1,050 (+ minor tax/redemption fees), a huge difference (even if you take into account the value of the miles accrued from a purchased ticket.)
Another notable redemption includes Hong Kong to Hawaii for 50,000 miles roundtrip. (Here’s the link again to the Avianca Redemption Chart)
The catch is your account must’ve been opened as of September 3, 2012. However, like US Airways, they have these promotions going on throughout the year, so if you don’t have an account, you can sign up for one now and try to catch the next 100% bonus in a few months time.
