San Francisco is a hot market for Hong Kong flights, with solid products offered by multiple airlines. One way in which Cathay seeks to set itself apart is with its own lounge in SFO’s international terminal.
The lounge is well signposted beside other lounges shortly after security. It is along a corridor which feels like a corporate office despite the display of vintage Cathay photos. The location is fairly close to gates, making this a functional security-lounge-gate hop compared to some large airports.
The lounge is open from 7.30 a.m. until just before Cathay’s last flight leaves, past midnight. Full details are on the Cathay website. We explain here how to access Cathay lounges including this one.
The lounge focus is on a central dining area though it is not super comfortable as it is noisy and many seats are not comfortable, simply benches.
There is also a relaxation area in which to watch television, though annoyingly television is hard to avoid in this lounge.
There is a business area with computers and printing available.
Beyond that most of the lounge is chairs. In daylight hours, the large windows offer good views out including some aeroplane views and more generally the lovely Californian scenery further afield. But the chairs are not especially comfortable – if you want to sit down for an hour before a flight, they are fine, but if you are connecting and want to lay back and snooze for a while you will find them uncomfortable.
There is a decent though fairly small buffet spread.
At certain times, the kitchen/noodle bar also offers an a la carte menu. A sample menu from a recent visit is below.
The lounge does not have its own bar but offers a decent range of drinks. They include locally brewed beers and a selection of Californian wines amongst others, so there is a pleasingly local flavour to the offering.
The lounge also offers some showers, which though not especially well designed are fit for purpose.
Despite not having great rest areas, this is a spacious, well lit lounge with good food and friendly staff.
