Singapore Airlines A380 Service SIN – HKG – SFO
Singapore Airlines has informed me of a service “pop-up” of the A380 from Singapore to Hong Kong to San Francisco, or vice versa.
A daily Hong Kong flight which continues to San Francisco will be served with the A380 instead of the Boeing 777-300ER on a seasonal basis between 28 December 2012 and 24 March 2013. This will increase to two the number of Hong Kong flights served each day with the A380, while it will be the first time SIA will be operating the A380 to San Francisco.
The full details are available in their press release.
This is good news for flyers who are interested in trying out Singapore Airline’s new jumbo jet and adds more capacity to San Francisco directly from Hong Kong. What happens after March 24, 2013? Who knows… I assume if demand is there they’ll keep the capacity but if not, they’ll probably downsize to a Boeing 777 again. But I do certainly hope this route does well as we can certainly use the increased schedule and capacity on this HKG – SFO route.
Of course you could also just try this plane to Singapore, but the flight isn’t nearly as long and probably won’t be drastically different as compared with other offerings on the HKG-SIN route.
I did fly Lufthansa’s A380 from Frankfurt to Johannesburg in February 2012 in business class. While the plane was nice and new, I didn’t think it was anything particularly special, maybe because Lufthansa’s business class is lackluster and didn’t even have lie-flat bed seating. The coolest thing was the upper level boarding and nice modern bathrooms. I’m sure the Singapore Airlines experience would be much better in comparison, particularly in the premium cabins.
