HK Prepaid SIM Cards – PCCW Comparison

PCCW is the largest telecom company in Hong Kong, in fact they just bought Telstra’s CSL, subject to government approval. PCCW prepaid SIM cards are available virtually everywhere. 7-11 (including at the airport,) PCCW shops, Circle K, Suning, Aeon, UNY, and VnGO. For a review of one2free SIM card, visit this page.

PCCW has a few different offerings of prepaid SIM cards depending on your needs, so I’d like to help compare them and offer our thoughts for you. Keep in mind only the PCCW-HKT All-In-One Rechargeable SIM Card says it’s specifically available in nano SIM card size. If you need the other SIM cards cut, try going directly to the PCCW store or ask nicely at other mobile phone shops.

For only local voice calls, or extremely limited mobile data, this is your best bet. Cards start at $48 and you can get about 600 minutes of call (averaging the peak/off-peak calling.) IDD (long distance) is really expensive using this card, so you have better options for that.

Typically these cards last 180 days or about 6 months. If you will be in HK for a long time, or will be going in and out on your travels and only need local voice calling, this is the best option from PCCW.

I don’t recommend this card. While it’s touted as good for long-distance IDD, it’s still expensive. Get the card I mentioned above instead, and just buy a cheap calling card to use it with instead or sign-up for an IDD service such as IDT1529 if you have a HKID card.

PCCW Discover HK Tourist SIM Card

PCCW-HKT Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM Card

Update November 2014: If you are looking to have this card in your hands before you arrive in HK, you can purchase it from our partners at Hong Kong SIM Card, and have it delivered to your address outside of HK.

This prepaid SIM card is very appealing to visitors in Hong Kong less than 8 days. It’s fairly all-inclusive for local HK use. Just keep in mind it expires at 11:59 PM on the 5th or 8th day, it’s not a 24 hour cycle. So don’t activate it on the first day at right before midnight, if you need to use it until the last day.

Basically this card offers unlimited local calling, about 55 or 77 minutes of international calling and PCCW WiFi for a duration of 5 or 8 days. There is either 1.5 GB or 5 GB of mobile data (Speed: 42Mbps for downlink with 5.76Mbps for uplink) which is more than enough for casual web surfing, map checking, e-mails, instant messaging, etc. Just don’t stream too many videos to use up your data allotment.

Start at $98, and comes in a nano SIM size at PCCW shops and Circle K.

If 8 days isn’t long enough for you, but you basically want all of the features of the Discover Hong Kong Tourist card, then this is the one. It’s rechargeable and offers local cards and IDD at OK rates, and you can purchase mobile data passes. However, I’d still purchase two of the 8 day tourist cards for a two week stay rather than one of these as the local data passes aren’t long enough. If you don’t use much data and 2GB is good enough to keep you for weeks at a time, you could activate the $218/2GB service which is good until the card expires, usually 180 days.

Do you know if the $218/2GB option allows internet sharing (or iPhone’s Set Up Personal Hotspot)? I am going to be in hk for 30-60 days so I would like that option where the “Usage period aligned with card validity”.

Discover Hong Kong tourist SIM card is rechargeable so there is no need to purchase two 5- or 8-day cards if you need to extend the period of your usage. All you have to do is go to a 7-11 or Circle K to get a reload (usually 100HKD min). For another 5-day unlimited data pass, you only need to pay 50HKD vs. getting a brand-new card for HKD69 and that way you can keep you your # too.
