Lounge Review: Hong Kong Airlines, HKG

Hong Kong Airlines introduced a new lounge around two years ago immediately beside where their old one had been, between gates 23 and 25.

Now their flights typically operate from gates in the midfield terminal, so for their own passengers at least, the lounge location is no longer convenient, though it does also operate as the contract lounge for a number of airlines whose flights may depart from nearby gates.

The lounge is substantially larger than the previous one. It is a big improvement in terms of ambience and facilities.

There are a number of different types of seating in the lounge. This includes some seats with good views by the window, table seating and also seating at dining tables.

There are a couple of computer terminals in the main part of the lounge, as well as a business area with computers at the back of the lounge. There is a printer although it has a slightly convoluted password system which seems unnecessary.

Also at the rear of the lounge is a semi-private rest area with a few recliners.

The food selection is much improved over what was on offer in the old lounge. They still have sandwiches, snacks, cheese and the like. However this is now complemented by a decent range of hot dishes. The kitchen is actually largely visible through a window in the food area.

The drinks selection is decent – there are various beers and soft drinks, the spirits are good and the wines are reasonable.

There is a middling section of mostly local newspapers and magazines.

The staff are quite friendly and keep the lounge clean though not always with the speed of, say, a Cathay lounge. The lounge can get quite noisy at times given the number and mix of passengers.

Overall this is a comfortable lounge in which to spend an hour or two and a big step up from the airline’s former flagship lounge.
