Cheung Chau Ferry

Cheung Chau is one of Hong Kong’s many outlying islands. It’s about a 35-55 minute ferry ride from Central, depending if you take the fast or ordinary ferry. Ferry schedule available here and below.

Last weekend I went to enjoy some BBQing in Cheung Chau. It’s fairly easy to get to, as mentioned there’s a ferry from the Central Ferry Piers behind IFC. Cheung Chau boats leave from Pier 5. It’s not that easy to tell the numbering, but it’s not too far from the Star Ferry Pier. The numbers are actually backwards for most people if you are walking from the Central Station MTR. The numbers are start from 1 to X from the Sheung Wan to Wan Chai direction, with the traffic direction.

I took the ordinary ferry both ways. The ordinary ferry took almost an hour, and if you take ordinary class, there’s no air conditioning. Keep this in mind in the summertime. It was sweltering and full of people. I’d never recommend it. I wanted to take the fast ferry on the way back but the schedule was somehow messed up and the next boat was the ordinary one so I just hopped on.

Ordinary class

Ordinary class, very ordinary

On the return I splurged for the air conditioned deluxe class at $33 HKD. There was no way I could go another trip in 33+ degree 100% humidity weather. This deluxe upstairs part of the vessel is a bit weird as it’s set up as an entertainment venue with round tables. It’s way more spacious and there’s tons of room for kids to run amok.

Deluxe class, more spacious, weird seating though.

I didn’t realize this until the return trip, but you can actually upgrade your ordinary ticket to deluxe class for $10 HKD ten minutes after the sailing begins, assuming there’s still seats on the upper deluxe class.

The trip is fairly easy, just keep in mind the weather, class of service, and ferry speed. It’s a bit confusing if you’ve never gone. I hope this helps.

$10 to upgrade is…..same regardless day of the week?

Erm…33+ degrees and 100% humidity and you wanted to enjoy some BBQ?! @.@
Anyway, thanks again for these very useful info. If I were there in that sweltering heat I’ll probably be too lazy to read the information boards at the piers. (or I just skip anything no-airco)
