Ticketing

This was ticketed as the fourth and final leg of a Taipei to Shanghai return ticket which in total cost HKD 5,448. I had needed to change the date of this leg from the original booking, which I was able to do simply and at no cost by e-mailing Cathay close to the originally scheduled departure date.

Checkin

I arrived at the airport an hour before the scheduled departure time of 12.15 a.m. and was checked in immediately. There had been an equipment change so instead of reclining seats the aircraft was now one with fully lie flat seats in a herringbone layout. I was thus assigned a new seat, 11K. The flight left from Gate 19.

Equipment

This was operated by a Boeing 777-300.

The screen was a good size, although the inflight entertainment system was not available until the plane was airborne.

Flight

The flight left and arrived exactly on time and had smooth flying conditions throughout.

Service

The cabin was almost full. The staff were welcoming at the start of the flight. The door closed just a couple of minutes after my boarding. Cabin crew were clearing glasses of boarding drinks – I was not offered any.


CX BUSINESS SEAT

The meal service was fairly functional and after that they went to the galley and I didn’t see them again until we started out descent. It is a fairly short flight but I would have liked to have seen them in the cabin more proactively.

Food and Drink

The meal service began almost immediately after the safety lights went out and was done from a trolley, with no preceding drinks service.

The starter and dessert were served together first, with the entrée coming out a bit later, which may be convenient from the servers’ perspective but looks odd. I asked for garlic bread but was told that there were only rolls as it is a short sector (I am not sure how this works, Dragonair has garlic bread on many short flights).

CX FOOD

The starter was fruit, which I never find that inspiring. The main course was tasty, well cooked and in general very good. I started with the Bourgogne, which was crisp and tangy, and moved onto the Côtes du Rhône Villages, which was fine.

Conclusion                          

This route often sees short delays in my experience, so I was pleased with the punctuality of this flight as well as its smoothness. I enjoyed the lunch overall, and found the crew to be functional but middling.
