Buses to HKIA

Many expats in Hong Kong only know how to get to HK International Airport in either of these two ways: Airport Express or taxi.

I think that the expansive bus network in HK makes getting to the airport by bus, a convenient and affordable option, particularly if we aren’t coming from HK Station or Kowloon Station.

For about $30-45 Cityflyer bus service runs a number of routes throughout HK island and Kowloon, and there’s free wifi service and comfy reclining seats.

The buses run every 20 minutes and run along MTR routes for the most part, so this should be convenient for most passengers.

For myself, living at the Taikoo MTR, there is a stop for the A12 on King’s Road. It takes about a solid hour on the bus, not including waiting time. Once I place my luggage on the racks, I just sit back and enjoy the scenic trip to the airport. There are also routes that run from North Point, Wan Chai, Central, and Kennedy Town on the island side, and the trip from these parts should be less than an hour.

On the other hand, if I were to take Airport Express, it would entail schlepping my luggage on the MTR, then changing at Central, which is a process itself; involving escalators & elevators, walking through long tunnel between Central and HK stations, and waiting for the Airport Express train (which now conveniently runs every 10 minutes according to the posters.) This exercise alone will take atleast one hour so I don’t see the point when the bus is so relaxing, and cheaper.

So I implore you to act like a local and try the bus!

[…] Many people utilize the MTR Airport Express in-town prior-day check-in feature. However, one of the drawbacks is that while this is touted as good for all passengers, it’s a matter of fact that not every airline allows check-in the day prior. (I think prior-day check-in is the main selling point of the Airport Express…without it there are many other viable options to get to the airport as I mentioned previously.) […]
