British Airways award search for oneworld partners

Continuation of posts advising the methods I use to search for award seats on Asia Miles or one of the oneworld partners. Therefore, these posts also apply to members of British Airways Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage, Qantas Frequent Flyer, JAL Mileage Bank, or another oneworld program.

Here is the list:

British Airways award search engine is both good and bad.

Good:
You can search oneworld partners, other than just British Airways.
Clearly states the miles / fees / cash+miles options after you select your flights.

Bad:
You can only search oneworld partners, when British Airways seats are unavailable that date.
The search engine is fickle, slow, and not user friendly.

As mentioned in a prior post, there is no official Avios redemption chart, but there’s an on-line calculator available.

It takes a bit of digging to get to the award search engine, but here’s a direct link

As with any search engine, you put in your destination and dates. BA charges exactly half for one way trips, so don’t feel obligated to book a return trip.

Let me show you a hypothetical example of a one-way flight from HKG – LAX. Since CX has a non-stop on this route I’ll try searching for that flight.

Once you search, if there’s a routing on BA, it’ll usually offer a stopover in London, but since the taxes in London are ungodly expensive, I’d try to avoid going through there at all costs.

In this particular case there’s no routings so the search partners option will be available to you on the left as well as the top.

Nothing available on BA and nothing available on my first date choice of Oct 4, but there’s an option to search 7 days away. (Which is a bit misleading, because it’ll only show you results on the next available date, within the next 7 days.)

There’s a flight available on the CX non-stop Oct 5. Great, I’ll click continue and it’ll show me the relevant taxes / fees / miles required. Keep in mind BA loves charging fuel surcharges, unlike AA.

Hope this’ll help make your search for award seats a bit easier using the BA engine.
